Arriving in Wisconsin

Before we started our summer job at the KOA campground, we were able to take some day trips around the state.

We had perfect weather for a day trip to Duluth MN and Superior WI, right across the bridge from each other! Walked along Lake Superior and we even happened to be there when the aerial lift bridge was up and a ship went through the canal! How cool was that! Some of those streets in Duluth look as steep as the ones in San Francisco!

How did I grow up in the Chicago area and not hear about the Eastland Disaster? The 100th anniversary is this July.  We saw an exhibit about this at the Corps of Engineer museum in Duluth.   http://www.eastlanddisaster.org/history/what-happened

When we drove through Superior we found a place that has been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Shorty’s Pizza and Smoked Meat.  Read more at: http://www.foodnetwork.com/restaurants/wi/superior/shorty_s-pizza---smoked-meat.html?oc=linkback

We found our first Cheese store and stocked up on some Wisconsin Cheese.  Terry likes cheddar and Kathie likes the Chocolate Cheese Fudge!  Yes, we have only been able to find it here in Wisconsin!

We even found a Walleye and Muskie fish hatchery!  http://www.washburncounty.com/hatchery.htm

The weather has been good enough to start grilling out again.  Yeah!  We had grilled hamburgers with CHEESE!

We have found out why this area of the state is called the “Northwoods”.  Lots of trees as in enough to provide for a logging industry here!  There is a Louisiana Pacific Company plant here that makes building supplies. We see train cars of tree trunks go to the plant and finished building products go from the plant.

Do you know what Minong, Wisc is home of?  Terry’s favorite Jack Links jerky.  In fact they have an outlet store and it is only 20 miles from Hayward.  We will be making many trips there this summer!
