April in East Texas - Part 2

We enjoyed our last couple of weeks in Livingston TX.  We tried to see as many sites as possible before we head to Wisconsin for the summer.

The last week we were in Livingston we took a couple day trips, one to Galveston and another to College Station.

When we got to Galveston We started at the Visitor Center and found the downtown historic district.  There are beautiful houses there, some of them have a plaque on the house where the water line was during the 2008 hurricane!  Some of the trees that were destroyed during that hurricane have been used by artists to create sculptures out of the remaining trunk.  They are all BEAUTIFUL.  We ate fish for lunch at a local favorite called the “Shrimp & Stuff”. We continued the drive and took the free ferry (with our car) across the bay on our way back home.

Had to touch the water in Galveston Bay/Gulf of Mexico!

Some of these houses have a plaque that says "water line from 2008 hurricane" or "1900 Storm Survivor"!

Another day we drove to College Station to visit the President Bush (41) Presidential Library on the campus of the Texas A&M University.  They did a wonderful job of recording the history of his family, life and presidency.  There is a big catch & release pond on the grounds for all to use.  Barbara created the most beautiful rose and flower gardens around the pond, too.  Many were in bloom the day we visited.  We also walked to the graveyard where their daughter Robin is buried.  There is room for George & Barbara to join her there when the time comes.   The quote that is on the side of the building reads: “Let future generations understand the burden and the blessings of freedom. Let them say we stood where duty required us to stand.” President George Bush, January 1991

Beautiful gardens and pond next to the library.

Recently, the CARE Center Board of Directors gave the residents some money to buy Walmart gift cards.  The residents are giving them away to “Caring Angels” that are voted on by the residents.  “Caring Angels” can be staff or volunteers that have gone above and beyond the call of duty.  Kathie was selected as the first volunteer to receive this award!  She is thrilled and honored to be recognized for serving while she was there for the many weeks.
